Army & Navy
Related Pages
There are stamps from two series on this album page: one set of Army related stamps, and one set commemorating the Navy.
The Army stamps show famous military leaders from the time of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War: such as, Generals George Washington, Andrew Jackson, and Ulysses Grant – as well as Robert E. Lee from the Confederate Army. There’s one for the West Point Academy <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Military_Academy> in New York, which was started during the Revolution and attended by many Generals and Presidents.
The Navy stamps show famous naval leaders: Admirals John Paul Jones, David Farragut, and others. It also includes a stamp for the U.S. Naval Academy in Anapolis, Maryland. Many Admirals and one President (i.e. James Carter) attended the naval academy.
Note
These stamps aren’t particularly interesting to me, the army and navy stamps. The choice of who is depicted seems a little haphazard. I don’t expect the list to be complete: that would be too many stamps. But I’m not sure why some of these people were selected. I also don’t like putting two or three of these people together. Some were related, but not fully. For example, although Nathanael Greene <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathanael_Greene> was one of George Washington’s top officers, but there were others that were equally and maybe more essential to Washington’s army during the Revolution.
