Occupations, Page NI-1 (GR-3)

The island, Nisiros, called currently Nisyros, is located in the Aegian Sea. Because it was formed by a volcano, it’s shape is fairly round. It has about one-thousand people living there.

These Italian stamps were for use only on this island, when it was an Italian colony: from about 1912 until 1947. The definitives were overprinted Nisiros. The commemorative stamps were overprinted, Nisiro, which is more aligned with Italian spelling (i.e., Italian words end typically with vowels).

Note

It was a slow process to get all of these stamps. I had all of the commemorative ones except the vertical red one at the top right. That was the situation for all of the twelve small islands in this sub-album. Most dealers had complete sets, but wouldn’t sell just that one stamp for each island. After a year of looking, I asked a dealer I buy from often if he could help me. He agreed to sell me the singles I needed. Then I had the struggle of finding all of the definitive stamps. That took over two years, but this page and all of the others like it are complete.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
