Environs
The U.N. Conference on the Human Environment was held in 1972 at Stockholm, Sweden. The conference led to the creation of the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP).
There were many problems at this conference. First, it was not yet evident to many that the environment was heading to significant problems. Some member states represented were not generally interested in the goals of the conference and tried to block its progress: the U.K., the U.S., Italy, France, etc. For developing countries, environmental protection policies might be an obstacle to their growth. However, because the UNEP was to be headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya – the first U.N. agency located in Africa or any developing country – they were swayed to support it.
As for the Soviet Union and the member states under their influence, they did not attend. They were protesting the exclusion of East Germany. Both West Germany and East Germany were not yet members of the U.N. because neither would accept the other. That situation, by the way, would not be resolved until the end of 1972. They were both made members on the same day in 1973.
Still, much was decided related to the protection of the environment at the Stockhold meeting, such as determination to protect natural resources, wildlife, reduction of pollution, better plannning of housing settlements in relation to environmental impact, weapons of mass destruction must be eliminated, etc. This is in part the basis for the artwork of the stamps on the second row of this album page.
Note
The first stamp on the first row of this album is to bring attention to the fact that the U.N. is opposed to apartheid in South Africa.
The bottom two stamps on this album page commemorate the U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs and the second Unispace conference held in 1982. You can read more about this on the Unispace page in the New York album.
