U.N. in Santiago
Although the U.N.’s focus may seem primarily to be global, they are very much concerned about regional and local issues. The U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean was established for the building of economic cooperation among countries in the region – in South and Central America, as well as with neighboring island nations in the Caribbean Sea.
This somehow includes the U.S., as well as Canada and Mexico. With the exception of Mexico, the other two would seem to be outside of the commision’s purview. But I guess they’re too critical to economic growth in the region to exclude. Perhaps they should change their name to the U.N. Economic Commision for the Americas. That would cover every participating member of the commission.
The outer stamps on the second row of this album page commemorates the United Nations headquarters in Santiago, Chile. It shows a drawing of the U.N. buildings there. This is where the commision meets.
Note
These stamps are colorful and fairly well designed. I like them all. The two of mosaics are probably the most interesting looking, but I found the establishment of U.N. offices in Santiago, Chile to be the more interesting story. Of course, it may be dull to others.
