15th Anniversary
This souvenir sheet was issued to celebrate the fifteen anniversary of the United Nations. Several countries became members of the United Nations since the last souvenir sheet was issued in October 1955 for the tenth anniversary. After the previous five-year period, it was a high growth time.
From Europe, Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Romania, and Spain joined – all in December of 1955 – along with Cyprus in 1960. In Asia, Cambodia, Laos, Nepal, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Japan, and Malaysia became members – all in the late 1950s. In Africa and the Middle East, Ghana, Guinea, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia in the last 1950s, and Benin (Dahomey), Burkina Faso (Upper Volta), Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire), Gabon, Madagascar, Niger, Somalia, Togo, Mali, Senegal, and Nigeria in 1960 all joined the U.N.
Note
The stamps are the same ones as those on the previous page – on the last row of that page. Those were issued, though, in sheets. They’re not taken from a souvenir sheet like this one.
