Ban Ki-Moon

U.N. Vienna, Page UNV 2007.0 (BL-3)

Ban Ki-Moon was born in 1944 in what’s now North Korea, but during the occupation by the Empire of Japan during World War II, which means in a sense he was a Japanese citizen and North Korean, but he’s actually a South Korean citizen. In 1970 he started working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for South Korea, becoming the Minister in 2004. In January 2007, he became the eighth Secretary General of the United Nations, serving until December 2016.

During his two terms, he worked to make some reforms, which weren’t always well received or successful. One change he made was to reorganize the U.N. Peace Keeping operations into two parts: one managing administration and other general operations; the other encompassing the military. Ban also worked to raise pubic awareness about the climate and global warming, pushing for practical action on behalf of member states. He also advocated for peace in the Middle East and for the protection of all peoples, including Palestinian refugees. In other parts of the world, he spoke up for the rights of Ukrainians and Syrians, speaking against Russia’s involvement in both.

Note

This sub-album isn’t complete in that I have not yet bought all of the Leuchtturm album pages for the years that Ban Ki-Moon was Secretary General. I bought and added only recently these pages, up to 2009 – and only for Geneva. I’ll probably buy next the pages for the same years for Vienna stamps, then much later the New York pages up to the end of 2009. After I have those pages along with descriptions, and have all of the stamps, then I’ll advanced to the next decade of album pages and stamps for all three U.N. post offices. The process will take months.
