Albania
In 1939, due to a large Italian population in Albania and the influence of the Fascists there, a political revolution of sorts was won. A new consitution was written and approved by the Albanian people and legislature. It was called, the Fundamental Statute of the Kingdom of Albania. As part of that new consitution, the king of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele III was declared king of Albania. The Italian government and troops were then invited to take control of Albania. This situation lasted until after World War II ended, until 1946 when a new consitution was passed, forming the republic of Albania.
These stamps are from that period. Based on all of this, I wasn’t sure whether to include them or where they belong. In a way, one could argue that Albania wasn’t part of Italy, but just another country over which the Savoy line was monarch. On that basis, I might not include Ethiopia since Vittorio Emanuele III was Emperor of Ethiopia. But it was also offiically declared a colony. Since the Italian post office handled Albania’s mail, it could be in the Post Office Abroad section – there is a page there for an FPO in Albania from the early 1900s. But this second involvement is different: they were less foreign at this point. Albania wasn’t a colony since it was an autonomous republic handling its own government administration. So I didn’t put it in the Colonies section. Albania was, however, occupied officially by Italian troops. Based on that, I chose this section, Italian Occupations.
Note
This is another new album. I’m in the process adding pages for all of the Italian colonies, occupations, and post offices abroad that I’m missing. I’m focusing on adding the stamp details to my database, designing the album pages, and posting them here. I’m not bothering with printing the pages and placing the few stamps I have for these on those pages. For now, the album pages are blank here. For some of the key pages, I’m trying to make time to write descriptions, but that’s a secondary priority – adding stamps is tertiary. A large part of stamp collecting has to do with arranging and displaying them.
