HIV & AIDS
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that attacks a person’s immune system. A retrovirus is a virus that inserts a DNA copy of its RNA genome into the DNA of a host cell and thereby changes the genome of that cell. Unless treated, it can lead to several problems, including acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
The first cases of AIDS were identified in homosexual community in the U.S. in the early 1980s, but it spread also to heterosexuals. It was transmitted initially through sexual activities. Later it spread to drug addicts who shared hypodermic needles. HIV passes from one person to another through the blood, breast milk, semen, or other protein rich body fluids. In time, a variety of people were infected, including mothers passing it to their infants when breast feeding.
Thanks to the work of the World Heath Organization and research facilities, we understand more about HIV and AIDS. The endemic was slowed and greatly reduced through education, prevention meausres, and treatments that were developed by the pharmaceutical industry.
Note
This kind of souvenir sheet may be interesting, but I find it irritating and unecessary. I think souvenir sheets should be created and printed rarely. I don’t see the point of having a sheet with one stamp like this. This won’t fit on a postcard or a letter size evelope. To reduce the size, you can remove the stamp, but that’s bothersome. I know: I’m a grump at times.
Contains 2 spots: own 2 – 2 unused, 0 used.
