Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa, and its largest ethnic group is the Mossi, who set up kingdoms such as Ouagadougou and Yatenga starting in the 11th century. France colonized the territory in 1896 and named it Upper Volta (Haute-Volta in French) in 1919, for the upper courses of the Volta River. It gained full independence on August 5, 1960, and the next two decades brought coups, droughts and famine. In August 1984, Captain Thomas Sankara renamed the country Burkina Faso – “Burkina” is Mooré for “upright” and “Faso” is Dyula for “fatherland”.
Sankara was killed in a coup on October 15, 1987, and his former colleague Blaise Compaoré took over, holding power until protests forced him to resign on October 31, 2014. Since then the country has dealt with an Islamist insurgency that began in August 2015 and two military coups in 2022, in January and September. Basically, political instability has been the norm since independence.
Note
Here’s another set of stamps depicting the flag and one coin from eacg member state. I’m not a fan of this series. At least these stamps have some interesting looking coins. I’ve always have liked coins with holes in the center (i.e., the one from Papua New Guinea). Those were popular in Asian countries at one time because they didn’t have pockets in their pants. Pockets weren’t sewn into pants until the 17th Century in the West and didn’t become common until the 19th Century. It was later for the East. Before pockets, coins were kept in a small sack tied to one’s belt. With a hole in the middle of the coins, though, you could string them together and forego the bag.
For several other album pages containing one of this flag and coin series, the only stamps on the page is the one sheet. It’s such a waste of space or paper or whatever. At least this one includes a set of four animal stamps. It’s not like someone is going to stop and admire these stamps. Maybe they will take time to look closely at the coins.
Contains 12 spots: own 12 – 12 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
