Volunteers
The square shaped stamps on each end of the middle row of this album page are meant to commemorate the U.N. Volunteers program. In 1961, U.S. President John Kennedy established the Peace Corps as an organization of U.S. volunteers working abroad to help those in need – in particular in developing health resources and education – and to promote peace amongst countries. From there an international version was formed a year later. In 1968, speaking at Harvard University, the last Shah of Iran proposed the establishment of a U.N. Volunteers program, which was formed in 1970.
The program now involves about ten-thousand volunteers who help to organize elections and provide support for many peacekeeping and humanitarian projects. In fact, they account for about a third of the civilians working in UN peacekeeping operations.
Note
The stamp showing the U.N. flag in the middle of the second row is meant to commemorate the U.N. and Kofi Anan receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. More information on that can be found in New York album, on the Nobel Peace Prize page.
