Cyrenaica

Italian Colonization of East Africa (1872 - 1915)

Cyrenaica, previously under the control of the Ottoman empire and later Turkey, became a colony of the Kingdom of Italy in 1911 after the Italo-Turkish War – along with neighboring Tripolitania. In 1936, they would be merged together, along with some other smaller adjacent territories that Italy occupied, to form the new colony of Libya. It would remain part of the Kingdom of Italy until 1943, but would not become independent of colonial powers until 1951.

See the introduction to my Libya and my Tripolitania albums for more on the history of this region.

Note

The stamps in this album are from Cyrenaica. I’ve only recently finished creating this album. It wasn’t too difficult since many of the same stamps are in the Tripolitania, execpt that these are overprinted with Cirenaica and those with Tripolitania. That made it easy to design the album pages in Adobe Photoshop: I was able to reuse the layout for several sets of stamps, although I arranged the sets differently to keep the pages from being mundane.
