Salonicco

Foreign Offices, Page SA-1 (GR-3)

Salonicco is the Italian name for Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece. It is also known in English as Salonica. Unlike the other cities in this section, Salonicco was never actually held by Italy. Its place in the story comes from the war between Italy and Greece.

In October 1940, Italy invaded Greece, though the invasion failed. In November 1940 alone, Fascist Italy heavily bombed the city, which left 232 dead, 871 wounded and over 800 buildings damaged or destroyed. The Italians never took the city themselves. Nazi Germany captured it on April 8, 1941, and it stayed under German occupation until 1944.

Italy did come back to the city in one more way, but not as an occupier. After September 1943, the Germans set up a transit camp called Dulag 410 in Salonicco for Italian Military Internees. Basically, Italian soldiers were now held in a city that Italy had bombed three years earlier. ELAS forces entered the city on October 30, 1944, after battles with the retreating German army.

Note

These stamps also are all Italian stamps depicting the King, Vittorio Emanuele III. They’re overprinted with the city’s name Salonicco and the cost in the local currency, the para of the Ottoman Empire.
