The Horn of Africa (1908) -- The Stamp Atlas, John Fowler

Starting around 1889, the Kingdom of Italy began entering and controlling what would become in the early 20th Century, the Somaliland colony. The colony was the result of merging a few territories: besides Somaliland proper along the coast of the Indian Ocean, there were also some protectorates on the Gulf of Aden, and Jubaland in the south (see the map). This will become what we now called, Somalia.

Note

The stamps in this album are from Somaliland. It’s a new album that I just added: I designed and printed the pages, and have been working on getting the stamps I’m missing. Not long before creating this album, I created my Libya, Tripolitania, and Cyrenaica albums. I have most of those stamps. Somalia has many more stamps from the Italian colonial days.

I’m a bit worn out from working on these albums. I’m taking a break before starting on another album. What remains, though, for the Italian colonies are the Italian East Africa – which were stamps for Somalia and other areas – and Italian Colonnies General Issue – I guess they got tired of issuing stamps for each colony. I also need to add pages for more Italian Occupations (e.g., Albania), as well as add a new section for Italian Post Offices abroad (e.g., Peking, China).
