Redeemed & Protected
The Opera Nazionale Assistenza Italia Redenta (i.e., National Assistance Work for Redeemed Italy) began a few months after the end of World War I in September 1919. It was an assistance program in the areas of education and health care for poverty stricken children resulting from the devastation of the war. At the time, besides suffering from malnutrition, children had a high risk of contracting diseases, such as tuberculosis and malaria.
The regions of Venezia Tridentina and Venezia Giulia, located along new borders established by the expansion of Italy as a result of it’s success in the war, were particularly affected in negative ways. Besides the problems and vulnerability of children, there was also a concern reguarding the restarting of the economy in these regions. They could not rely on normal factors resolving the problems of these regions.
When the Fascists came to power, they had this government program build nursery schools to indoctrinate children of the two regions in Fascist thinking – although they said it was to Italianize and assimilate Croatian and Slovenian children.
Note
The stamps on the top row are over printed Opera Nazionale Assistenza Italia Redenta. I described that program on this page. I’ll work on writing something about the others later. For now, I’ll just translate the overprint text.
The second and third row stamps are overprinted, Opera Nazionale Protezione Assistenza Invalidi Guera, which translates to National Protection Assistance Disabled War. The last row of stamps are overprinted with the words, Patronati Scolastici, meaning School Patronages.
Contains 16 spots: own 8 – 8 unused, 0 used.
