Boutros Boutros-Ghali

U.N. New York, Page 92.0 (BL-1)

Boutros Boutros-Ghali was Secretary General of the U.N. for five years, from January 1992 until the end of 1996. He was an Egyptian politician from Cairo. He was elected when it was Africa’s turn in the rotation of the position.

Although he was unopposed when he ran for a second term, the U.S. vetoed his election. They seemed to have felt that he did not handle U.N. peacekeeping forces properly in a few instances (e.g., in Bosnia and Herzgovina) and that his bias in a conflict in Somalia led to a prolonging of that situation and many deaths. As a result, he withdrew his attempt at serving a second term. He was replaced by Kofi Annan, another African.

Note

The stamps on the album pages in this section of my collection of United Nations stamps were issued while Boutros Boutros-Ghali was the Secretary General.
