Ferrucci

Italian Colonies, Page TR-6 (GR-2)

Francesco Ferruccio, born in the late 15th century, was a soldier for the Medici family in Florence. He was an irreverant and audacious leader who successfully led attacks on Florence and Venice, as well as threatened the Papal States. Over the centuries, he became a legend and was revered by the Fascists in the 1930s. Even his death, resulting from being wounded in battle, was celebrated.

The five stamps in the first set on this page commemorate Ferruccio, they depict the Siege of Volterra, and his death when he was killed by Fabrizio Maramaldo. The three air mail stamps in the related second set are of a statue of Ferruccio – which I believe I’ve seen in Torino.

Campidoglio

The third stamp in the set of historical monuments shows part of the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome. It’s located near the Roman Forum, at the top of Capitoline Hill. It was reconstructed and renovated in the Sixteenth Century under the commission of Pope Paul III by the artist Michelangelo. It later housed and still is the city hall of Rome.

Note

When I first designed this album page, I had only the Ferrucci stamps on it. You can see that on pages in my other Italian colony albums. It made sense to keep them altogether and separate from other sets of stamps. However, when I redesigned this album, I opted for a more compact layout with fewer album pages.
