Parcel Post
The top set of parcel post stamp pairs from 1945 are the same as the ones printed and distributed prior to the King removing Mussolini and the Fascists from power. You can see how they look without overprinting on the Parcel Post page in the Kingdom album, in the second set of stamps on that page. But on these stamps at the top of the page, the post office overprinted the Fascist symbols with a bit of royal florish to indicate the Fascists are gone.
In 1946, they changed the printing dies and printed new parcel post pairs without the fasces in the middle. Click on the image of the album to enlarge it so that you can see the second set of stamps more closely. These were distributed in the 1946 during the remaining months of Umberto II’s reign as Royal Lieutenant and his month or so as the last King of Italy.
Note
There’s something cheerful about these parcel post stamps, the look and bright pastel colors. Maybe I’m projecting joy into them based on what they represent: a fresh start and a new king. The romantic side of me and the American upbringing makes me wish Umberto II and the monarchy had remained.
