U.N. Skyline

U.N. New York, Page 89.1 (BL-1)

The stamp at the top of this album page is a photograph of the United Nations headquarters in New York, located on the East River side of mid-town Manhattan. It’s located on about eighteen acres of land donated to the U.N. by the Rockefeller family, a wealthy oil baron family of the U.S. The project to design and contruct the complex of buildings began in 1947.

The U.S. President, Harry Truman with the approval U.S. Congress provided the initial financing of the contruction. By 1950, the main building, the Secretariat was opened for use, although not all offices were finished or furnished. The U.N. headquarters was finished completely in October of 1952. There was still more to do, though. For instance, they wanted a library with nearly a half-million books – books in all known languages. The Dag Hammarskjöld Library Building was built and completed in November 1961 – when I was born.

Note

The two stamps at the end of the second row are meant to bring attention to the twenty-fifth anniversary of the U.N. World Weather Watch Programme. You can read more about it on the Weather Watch album page.

On the third row are two stamps meant to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the opening of the U.N. headquarters in Vienna, Austria. See the first page, the Donaupark page of the Vienna album.

The single stamp on the bottom row is to commemorate the U.N. Peacekeeping being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1988. See the Nobel Prizes album page for more information on this.

There are other stamps on this page, like the two for the World Bank, but I don’t have anything written on them. I need to add them.

Contains 8 spots: own 8 – 8 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
