Families Day

U.N. Vienna, Page UNV 2006.3 (BL-3)

In the 1980s, the U.N. began focusing on problems related to families. In mid 1980s, the Commission for Social Development requested the Secretary General to enhance awareness among decision makers and the public of the problems and needs of the family – especially directed towards governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and public opinion.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembley declared May 15 of each year the International Day of Families. The point of this day is to promote awareness of issues related to families, and to increase knowledge of social, economic and demographic processes affecting them. Each year the Secretary General sets a theme for the day. For 2006 the theme was Changing Families: Challenges and Opportunities. The two stamps on the top row of this album page commemorate this day.

Note

The souvenir sheet on this page is part of a series that include a stamp for each member state depicting each country’s flag and coin. For Euro Zone countries, this is basically the same coin except that there’s generally a different image for each. So they’re slightly different.

I don’t care for this series. They already had the flag series. This is just another flag series, except with coins too. Will they issue next a series with flags and paper currency? It’s pandoring to the member states and trying to get more money from stamp collectors. They already issue too many stamps each year for a public and an organization that sends very little mail. How many envelops and packages do they ship each year? I’d imagine thousands. They print a few hundred thousand to over a million of each stamp. It’s too much.

Contains 12 spots: own 12 – 12 unused, 0 used.
