U.N. Economic & Social

U.N. Vienna, Page UNV 2009.3 (BL-3)

The U.N. Economic and Social Council – abbreviated as ECOSOC – is one of the six principal components of the United Nations that’s responsible for coordinating economic and social aspects of the U.N.

ECOSOC is over several U.N. agencies: the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which works to eliminate hunger and to improve nutrition, globally; the International Labour Organization (ILO), which seeks to standarize labor conditions, reduce unemployment, and eliminate slavery in all forms; the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG), which strive for financial stability in the world, promote international trade and employment, as well economic growth. They also oversee the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which approves and maintains the list of World Heritage Sites; the World Health Organization (WHO), which is critical during a pandemic and for research and preventative measures, globally; World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for the sharing of weather information. Of particular interest to e as a stamp collector is the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which sets standards and agreements for international handling of mail. There are several other agencies of which ECOSOC is in charge.

The top two stamps commemorate ECOSOC concerns: the first is about combating diseases; the second is meant to bring attention to reducing child mortality around the world.

Note

The commemorative sheet of stamps at the bottom, taking most of the album page, is about indigenous people of the world. In the table I list the loccation of each person pictured. For more on this series, see Indigenous People in the New York album.
