40th Anniversary
This souvenir sheet was issued to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the United Nations. Several countries became members of the United Nations since the last souvenir sheet was issued in October 1980 for the thirty-fifth anniversary. They added only five for this period. Three island nations – Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Vanuatu – and one semi-island nation – Brunei – was admitted. And one Central American country joined: Belize.
The art work for these two stamps come from paintings by Andrew Wyeth, one of the great American artists of the Twentieth Century. The bottom one is detail of a painting called, The Corner. It’s a scene in Pennsylvania of a farm that had been sold to developers who intended to clear the land and sub-divide it into several lots for homes to be built. This painting marks the end of an era – at least for this parcel of land. After thousands of years as just land, and hundreds of years as just fields and a house, it would become a neighborhood with housea – and perhaps a corner where the farm house was located. A year after this was painted, the farm house was demolished and construction of roads and new houses began.
The painting shown in the other stamp is supposed to be a watercolor entitled, Alvaro Raking Hay. However, I can’t find much information on that painting. I’ve searched the internet, and books I have of Andrew Wyeth’s artwork. I found one post on Facebook of the scene, but I’m not sure if it’s a detail of a larger painting. I do know it was painted in Maine, probably in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
Note
Wyeth paintings are among my favorites. Not just Andrew Wyeth’s, but also the works of his son Jamie Wyeth, and his sister, Henriette Wyeth – and others in their family. It must have been amazing to be part of that family.
