Castelrosso Area Map
The island of Castelrosso is located about a mile off the coast of Turkey. Depicted in these stamps, you can see the flag of the Kingdom of Italy at the bottom left corner, and a simple map showing the island of Castelrosso in the middle, and the Turkish coast at the top and to the right. It says Asia Minor, which is an old name of peninsula on which most of Turkey is now located.
The peninsula is also called, Anatolia, which is derived from Greek to mean, the east or where the sun rises. Although it’s the most western part of Asia, from Greece’s perspective, Anatolia is in the east and where the sun seems to rise.
What’s significant about these stamps, other than the visual of Italy’s flag being planted near Castelrosso in declaration of their occupation, is that these stamps were made specifically for use in Castelrosso – unlike the ones on the previous page which are overprints of Italian definitives. They printed 100,000 of each of these stamps, even though there were less than a thousand people living on the island – then and now. That’s an indication they intended to stay.
Note
There aren’t many stamps on this page. I could push them together with stamps from another page, such as the ones from the Francesco Ferrucci page – except those are from 1930. Instead, I think it’s better to have these stamps on a seprate page since they’re unique to the island – as I mentioned above.
