UNESCO

U.N. New York, Page 84.1 (BL-1)

The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is another specialized agency of the United Nations. Started in 1945, it focuses on education, culture, as well as the arts and sciences. Their belief is that peace can be achieved with education and exchanging of ideas and artistic expression. Besides literacy programs and education in general, they provide technical training and assistance in advanced scieces. They seek to promote and preserve cultures around the world.

Related to all of this, countries can register with UNESCO places that have cultural, historical, or scientific significance as World Heritage Sites – sites that are considered of outstanding value to humanity and that need to be preserved for future generations. If a site is approved, it will be given funding for maintaining, as well as legal protection under international treaties. Generally, UNESCO sites become tourist destinations and bring in significant revenues for the member state.

The stamps on the third row depict two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The first is the Grand Canyon. I’ve been there. It’s so spectacular that we, as Americans cannot think of as ours. It belongs to the world. In fact, I’ve often thought that denying anyone a visa to enter the U.S. to see the Grand Canyon is denial of a basic human rights.

Note

The stamps on the top row are related to the Food and Agriculture Organization. I talk about them in the Geneva collection, which has the same stamps (see the World Food album page). For now, I just want to say they’re beautiful stamps. From this point, many of the U.N. stamps are well designed.

Contains 10 spots: own 10 – 10 unused, 0 used.
