The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization is another specialized agency of the U.N. It was started in 1945 with the mission to try to defeat hunger, as well as improve nutrition and food security. Their headquarters is currently in Rome, Italy.

The FAO coordinates government and non-governmental organizations with activies that hopefully improve agricultre, fisheries, land and water resources, as well as forestry. It does researcch and assists wherever it can in these areas, including education, training, and related data analysis.

The top two stamps, which have a unique and nice design, are meant to promote the work of the FAO. Four other stamps were issued in this series: see the corresponding New York and Vienna pages.

The stamps on the third row call for the protection of refugees and commemorate the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. See the Protect Refugees page for more on that.
