War Victims
These are semi-postal stamps. They’re stamps that have two prices on them: one is for the cost of mailing the letter to which it’s attached, and the other amount is for a charity. These stamps are overprinted with Pro sinistrati di guerra, which translates to For victims of war. It was a fund raising method. I’m not sure why people living in the Aegean Islands who probably weren’t very wealthy, had suffered must from the war, and were being oppresed by an occupying force would voluntarily pay extra for postage to help victims in their oppressor’s homeland. But maybe the funds were used locally.
Note
This page is complete, but the layout is pretty dull. I may arrange the stamps a litle differently to make it more interesting visually. For the first set I could lay them with three rows: two stamps, three, then one. For the second set, I could do all four on the same row, or one on one row and three on the next – or one, two, then one stamp. I’ll have play with it in Adobe to see how those possibilities might look.
Contains 10 spots: own 10 – 10 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
