Habitation Year
The U.N. Human Settlements Programme was started in 1977 for improving and building human settlements and sustainable urban development. In 1976, the Programme had its first conference, known as Habitat I in Vancouver, Canada.
As somewhat of a continuation or revitalization of Habitat I, 1987 was declared the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless. It’s goal was to improve housing for the poor in developing countries in general, and the homeless in particular.
The Habitat II conference was held in 1996 at Istanbul. You can read more about it on a later page: see Habitat II.
Note
The first stamp on the second row depicts Trygve Lie, the first Secretary General of the U.N. See the Trygve Lie page for more on him. The stamp at the end of the second row shows a bit of the outside of the U.N. offices in Geneva. See the Geneva Office page for more on it.
The two outer stamps on the last row were issued in celebration of U.N. Day. You can read about it on the U.N. Day page.
