Ostrich
The first three rows of this album page are set for stamps depicting a few images of the region of Libya. There’s an image of the local person playing a drum. There’s an image of a frankincense tree, of which its resin is famously known from the story of Jesus’ birth. There are also some images of aninimals: a leopard, an eagle, and an ostrich.
The ostrich is the largest of birds currently in existence, and is flightless. Based on the widely accepted theory that birds are surviving species of avian dinosaurs, it’s considered the oldest species of birds – closest in features to it’s original ancestry.
There are two species of ostriches – until recently, there were thought to be only one. There’s the common ostrich and the newly classified Somalian ostrich. The species shown in the first stamp on this album page is a common one, but from the sub-species, North African ostrich – or at least one would think this since it’s meant to be an ostrich from Libya.
The point of all of these stamps like many others from this time that were issued in the colonies, was to promote interest and trade with the colonies amongst people of the Italian peninsula.
Note
This album page is empty, which is frustrating to me. I should be able to find them at a low price. Although they’re commemoratives and they printed 10,000 of each, they’re difficult to find, are mostly sold in singles, and they’re expensive. I have to keep hunting for a set I can afford.
Contains 13 spots: own 0 – 0 unused, 0 used.
