Boreal Owl
In the bottom right corner of this album page are a pair of stamps, both showing birds. The one on the right is a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak. The other is a Boreal Owl. I prefer to write about the latter.
The Boreal Owl is a small owl, about nine inches long, but with a wing-span of about twenty-two inches – the females are about two inches more on both measurements – and they have a large head by comparison. Males that breed live four to ten years, while females can live up to eleven years.
Boreal Owl is found in the Northern Hemisphere around the globe – south of the Arctic circle, though, and north of the forty-degree paralleel (i.e., nostly north of the U.S. and Canada border), but it’s found often in select areas farther south. However, they’re a nocturnal bird and avoid humans. They prefer forests, in particular boreal forests where there are mostly conifers. Because of these traits and locations, they’re rarely seen by people.
Note
Again, I appreciate that the Post Office is issuing stamps with pictures of birds on them, but can’t they design them better? I’m spoiled from the images used in the Northern Wildlife series and the State Birds series. Those two series showed what they can do and now I want nothing less when it comes to bird stamps.
Contains 11 spots: own 10 – 10 unused, 0 used.
