Simi

The island of Simi, called also Symi, is located in the Aegian Sea, twenty-five miles north of Rodi near the coast of Turkey. It has a population of about twenty-six hundred people. Like the other islands in this zone, it was an Italian colony from about 1912 until 1947. It’s currently a popular holiday destination for Italian and British tourists.

These are Italian stamps; they were for use only on this island during the time when the island was under the rule of the Kingdom of Italy. They were overprinted with Simi, which is pronounced, see-me.

Note

On the commemoratives page, I was missing just one stamp – in the Ferrucci set. As I mentioned on a previous page, I remember buying these stamps from a dealer in New Orleans, Roy Aitkens in the 1980s. He had Ferrucci sets for each island without the one more expensive stamp for each island in the set. To just guess at the prices, the first four were probably about a dollar and the last one in the set probably cost ten dollars. Since I didn’t have much money in those days, I bought the cheaper sub-set and not the expensive one. Fortunately, I found a dealer in Milan who sold me the one I was missing from each. Now I just need to get the few definitive stamps I need for each island.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
