Royal Visit

Possibily to celebrate Rodi and the Dodecanese islands being part of the Kingdom of Italy the king, Vittorio Emanuele III and the queen, Elena of Montenegro visited these islands in 1929. This set of nine stamps commemorate that royal visit to Rodi. They went by ship, on the royal yacht called La Savoia. I see on-line videos of the visit to Rodi, but haven’t seen any video taken on the other islands. I’m still looking for more information on the purpose of the voyage and where they went.

These stamps depict castles and other places in Rodi, as well as a crusader knights – the Knights Hospitaller which were based in Rodi from the 14th through the 16th Century. Still, I’m not sure what these images have to do with the royal visit.

Note

This page was a little sparse. I’ve been working to resolve that. I received recently the two stamps on the first row, and the Ferrucci stamps at the bottom of the page. It’s looking a little more respectable.

The few stamps I have from the royal visit I acquired somehow decades ago. This set is a little expensive, so it may be a few months before I get them. I have the same set of stamps, but overprinted to commemorate some event or cause. Those are strangely cheaper because there are more of them than these original ones.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
