50th Anniversary
The first meetings of representatives from the founding states of the United Nations were held in San Francisco. The U.N. Charter was signed there in June 1946 in the War Memorial Opera House. The charter and U.N. went into effect October 24, 1946.
This souvenir sheet was issued in June 1995, on the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the U.N. Charter – rather than in October on the usual anniversary of the start of the U.N., as with the previous souvenir sheets issued every five years. You can see in the background a scene of the charter being signed. One of the two stamps shows a hand and pen signing, and the other shows the War Memorial Opera House where the delegates met.
Many countries were added since the last five-year enniversary, primarily due to the end of the Soviet Union. This led to the addition of former Soviet states, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Georgia. It also led to the freeing of Soviet satelite countries like the Baltic States – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – and disbursal of Yugoslavia – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, and North Macedonia – as well as Czechoslovakia – adding Czechia and Slovakia as seprate members.
Both the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea became members, as well as a few more island names: Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Plus, three city states in Europe joined: Andorra, Monaco, and San Marino. And a former Italian colony, Eritrea broke free of Ethiopia to become an independent country and member state.
Note
Finally, Leuchtturm decided to put the souvenir sheet together with the sheet stamps that match it. They also added a related stamp, in this case, that also commemorates the anniversary. This is a m uch better layout and use of the page. I wish they would have done the same for previous souvenir sheets.
