Women’s Conference

U.N. Geneva, Page UNG-95.1 (BL-2)

The U.N. Charter calls for equality for men and women. Realizing in 1975 there is inequality to the detriment of women, the United Nations declared that year the International Women’s Year, and every March 8 from that point officially, International Woman’s Day.

As part of the Women’s Year, the first World Conference on Women was held in Mexico City. On the second row of this album page, the second and third stamps commemorate the fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995. One of my former professors and friend from college attended that conference. Hillary Clinton – then First Lady – was a speaker.

Clinton’s speech has been credited to the growth of the movement of what is known as the feminist foreign policy. This calls for international policies include the advancement of gender equality, as well as improving basic human rights of women, ensuring women are participating freely and equality in political decisions and representation or leadership, and that they have the same resources as men. I’m very much in favor of all of this; I’m prejudice in favor of women. I think women typically make better leaders than men. Women gave birth to us all: they should be in charge.

Note

Although the stamps commemorating the women’s conference on the second row are a little cluttered looking, if you look at them closely, they’re pretty nice. They were designed by a Chinese painter and printmaker, Ting Shao Kuang from Beijing. His style seems to be a mix of Art Deco from the 1920s, Egyptian figures, and with Chinese influences. The choice of a Beijing artist who’s known for paintings and posters of women looking stylish and powerful is fitting for this set of stamps. The only thing that would have made them better would be if he were a woman.
