21st Century
In September 2000, held a meeting of world leaders, the Millennium Summit in New York to discuss the role of the U.N. in the Twenty-First Century. They agreed upon and signed the Millennium Declaration.
In that declaration, they decided on some goals for the U.N. First were a guiding set of values and principles: freedom, equality, solidarity, tolerance, respect for nature and the use of natural resources, and shared responsibility. From these principles came their primarily goals:
Peace, Security and Disarmament;
Development and Poverty Eradication;
Protecting our Common Environment;
Human Rights, Democracy and Good Governance;
Protecting the Vulnerable;
Meeting the Special Needs of Africa; and
Strengthening the United Nations.
In 2005, there was another summit of world leaders to review their progress on these goals and to determine if they require adjusting.
Note
This commemorative sheet of stamps are meant to illustrate the areas of interest and the role of the U.N. in the Twenty-First Century. There was one issued for each U.N. postal administration. I don’t like these kinds of stamps. I think the primary function of stamps should be for mailing letters and other items. Most of this is just for show and will be discarded if the stamps are removed to send letters. But then again, I purchased these stamps and all of the others in my albums with no intention of using them for postage.
