Africa Crisis
The middle stamp on the top row of this album page has a caption that reads, “Africa in Crisis”. It was designed by Wosene Kosrof, an Ethiopian painter.
The U.N. stamp catalog states in relation to this stamp, “In many African countries, the fight against hunger and malnutrition is a lasting crusade against one of mankind’s worst enemies.”
There are currently five active peacekeeping operations: in the Central African Republic; in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; in Western Sahara; in South Sudan; and in Abyei, a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan.
In addition to and because of political and military conflicts, Africa has a food crisis leaving many people starving – which is also caused by climate changes, slow economic growth, and the residual effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, much of Africa has healthcare deficiencies becasue of a poor infrastructure and a weak economy, leading to more poverty.
Note
The two outer stamps at the top of this album page are meant to promote stamp collecting, in particular stamps issued by the U.N. Postal Administration. See the first page of the New York album for more on this – the The Beginning page.
The set of four stamps in the middle are related to the U.N. Development Programme. See the Development Program page of the Geneva album.
The souvenir sheet at the bottom is in commemoration of the fortieth anniversary the World Federation of U.N. Associations. See the U.N. Associates page for more on it. Incidentally, this is a good size for a souvenir sheet. I wish all of them were similar size and layout.
Contains 10 spots: own 10 – 10 unused, 0 used.
