Nobel Peace Prize
In 2001, Kofi Annan and the United Nations were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world and for revitalizing the U.N. and and its mission for the promotion and protection of human rights.
Kofi Annan, who was no longer Secretary General at the time of the award, was also commended for his work, after his time as leader of the U.N., to try to eliminate HIV in Africa, as well as his efforts to prevent international terrorism.
Note
The stamp commemorating the Nobel Peace Prize is the one in the middle of the top row of this album page. It’s just a photo of the U.N. flag on a mast. Other than the text saying, Nobel Peace Prize 2001, you wouldn’t know this is the point of the stamp. They should have included a image of Kofi Annan in front of the flag. But maybe there’s a rule at the U.N. that won’t allow anyone living to be on U.N. stamps – much like the one we have in the U.S. For the U.S. law, you can have a living person’s image on a stamp as long as you don’t refer to them directly – or maybe that’s someone only recently dead.
The square stamps on both sides of the flag stamp are to commemorate the U.N. Volunteers program. You can find more information on that on the Volunteers page in the Vienna album.
Contains 11 spots: own 11 – 11 unused, 0 used.
