Better Environment

U.N. New York, Page 91.1 (BL-1)

The U.N. Economic Commission for Europe is a regional commission of the U.N. (see the Econ. Comm. for Europe album page). It was formed in 1947, with its first tasks to help with the rebuilding of European countries after World War II.

Starting in 1971, one of the focuses of UNECE has been the environment. They seek to reduce pollution, use of natural resources more responsibly. They try to integrate or balance social policies with environmental policies – while at the same time continuing to improve the economic growth of European countries. The set of four stamps in the center of this album page was issued to bring attention to this area of concern, with the sub-title of For a better environment.

Note

On the top row of this album page are two stamps celebrating the new country, Namibia. You can read more about this on an earlier album page: Namibia, Africa.

The set of four environmental stamps vaguely related to the Economic Commission for Europe are the first of many such issues, not only in Geneva and Vienna, but in New York. I think it’s an excuse to print stamps of animals, which people like – kids and topical collectors in particular – as a scheme to sell more stamps.

The two stamps on the sides of the set of stamps are reprints of two of the first stamps of the U.N. (see The Beginning) to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the U.N. Postal Administration.

On the bottom row is a very nice stamp showing the U.N. headquarters in New York. See the U.N. Skyline album page for more on the U.N. complex. The other two stamps on that bottom row are related to the Rights of Children. See the Child Rights for more on that.
