Antonio Grossich

Occupations, Page FO2 (GR-3)

Antonio Grossich was from the Fiume region and local hero.

He was a surgeon and doctor, specializing in obstetrics. He was one of the first to promote sterilization of operating equipment and operating rooms for surgeries. He also advocated the use of iodine for sterilizing wounds. All of which saved countless lives.

From 1918 until 1924, he served on the Italian National Council of Fiume. For his work in medicine, he was given the Order of the Crown of Italy. The first two stamps on this page depict Grossich.

Note

The first stamp on this page, which I’ve ordered recently from a local dealer, was issued before the Italian occupation, but continued to be printed and sold after the Italian government took control of Fiume. So I’ve included it in my Fiume sub-album, along with the overstamped version next to it.

There aren’t many dealers that in Italy that offer Fiume stamps, but I’m looking for the ones on the bottom row of this page.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
