Interparliamentary Union
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) was founded in 1889 as an organization or forum of representatives from all parliaments in the world. In a sense, it was in part a predecessor to the League of Nations and the United Nations, but it continues today. It has permanent observer status at the U.N. While initially it was only for governments with parliaments, it now includes legislatures from other forms of governments. Almost all countries in the world are members, but not the United States
At the IPU, many international laws have been negotiated and several international institutions confer — such as with the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The IPU focus in particular is on peace and the wellbeing of all peoples of the world. In fact, eight of its leaders were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Note
The stamp commemorating the Inter-Parliamentary Union is the one in the middle of the page, in the middle of the second row. It shows the Villa Gardiol in Geneva, the headquarters for the IPU since 1921.
Another stamp on this album page worth noticing is the one of Ralph Bunche. A description of this key person from the beginnning of the U.N. is described on the Ralph Bunche page in the Vienna album.
Contains 9 spots: own 9 – 9 unused, 0 used.
