Aegean Islands
The Aegean Sea is the water way between Greece and Turkey. It’s huge and has many islands, collectively known as the Aegean Islands. Click on the map image here to see islands it includes: they’re the ones in blue, orange, red, and yellow. However, since my collection of stamps includes only Italian stamps, my interest here is for just the islands in yellow and red.
The Italian islands in the southeast of the Aegean, the yellow ones, were the Dodecanese: Rodi, Calimno, Caso, Cos, Karki, Leros, Lipso, Nisiros, Patmos, Piscopi, Scarpanto, Simi, and Stampalia. The other Italian islands in the Aegean Sea were the Cyclades, the red ones on the map.
Note
For the Aegean islands under the control of Italy, the stamps overprinted Egeo were used. Those are stamps are contained on the pages that follow. Like the other album pages for the Italian colonies, I had to look through stamp catalogs to determine which stamps were issued for the Aegean Islands while they were part of the Kingdom of Italy – and which I wanted to include in my collection. Then I had to design the album pages in Adobe Photoshop and print them.
This sub-album is almost complete. I’m missing only a few stamps on two pages here. Below is a table listing the pages that are missing stamps and how many I need or ordered. The set for the Hydrological Congress are generally a few hundred to over a thousand euros. I’ve seen them for sale for around a hundred euros on sites for dealers I don’t know. I’m suspicious that those might be fakes, they may be ones from the first page, which are cheaper, with the overprint faked.
