Ayn Rand
Ayn Rand was born Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum in Saint Petersburg on February 2, 1905. After the October Revolution her father’s pharmacy was nationalized, and she graduated from Leningrad State University in October 1924. She arrived in New York on February 19, 1926, and moved on to Hollywood, where she worked for Cecil B. DeMille and married the actor Frank O’Connor on April 15, 1929. She became an American citizen on March 3, 1931.
Her first novel, We the Living, was published in 1936, and her first major success was The Fountainhead in 1943. Atlas Shrugged followed in 1957 and became her best-selling book, and after it she turned to nonfiction. She called her philosophy Objectivism, which holds up reason, rational self-interest and laissez-faire capitalism. Her books have sold over 37 million copies.
Note
The first stamp on the third row is of Ayn Rand. It was illustrated by the artist Nick Gaetano. Rand was a stamp collector who started as a child like I did, left it for decades and resumed later in life to become an avid one – also like me. I think she would be pleased to know there’s a stamp commemorating her life. I know I would be thrilled.
