Reduction
The U.N. declared the 1990s the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. It was meant to raise public awareness about natural disasters and to call upon member states to work together to be prepare for natural disasters to reduce the number of deaths and loss of property, to minimize economic and other disruptions in people’s lives. Natural disasters can include earthquakes, droughts, floods, hurricanes, and other such events.
Note
The first set of stamps are colorful, well designed, and interesting. But I covered other stamps issued the same day in this series elsewhere: see the Endangered Species page. So I focused on writing about the other set of stamps here.
This second set of stamps are related to Natural Disaster Reduction are poorly designed and not very colorful. I realize they’re about unplesant events, but this gloomy design doesn’t make people want to use the stamps, nor does it make recipients look closely at the stamps and wonder.
Nothing is learned or promoted by these stamps. The U.N. has issued many stamps with such minimal and unattractive design style. If it weren’t for their many good and interesting programs, as well as many stamps that are were designed, I probably would be deterred from collecting them.
