Habitat II

U.N. Geneva, Page UNG-96.2 (BL-2)

The second U.N. conference on Human Settlements, called Habitat II was held at Istanbul in 1996. It was referred to as the City Summmit. Incidentally, Habitat I was held twenty years before. Related to that, see Habitation Year.

The City Summit was a conference of delegates from many nations, along with non-governmental agencies, businesses, educational organizations, and reserach groups. They discussed providing at least the basics of homes all people, as well as having more sanitary and safer cities. These are some of the elements of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Note

The first set of stamps is part of the Endangered Species series. Previous ones mostly depicted animals and birds. You can see another set of them and read more about them on the Endangered Species page.

The souvenir sheet at the bottom is related to the one-hundredth anniversary of the Olympics. You can read about it on the Olympics page of the Vienna album.
