St. Vitus

Occupations, Page FO7 (GR-3)

Saint Vitus is the patron saint of Fiume, now Rijeka in Croatia. The Jesuit cathedral in Fiume was concecrated as St. Vitus Cathedral. The stamps on the third row of this album page depict St. Vitus.

St. Vitus lived in the Fourth Century. He was from Sicily, but for some reason was celebrated by christians in Fiume. He’s also a patron saint of actors, comedians, and dancers. There’s nothing notable about his history, nothing related to these occupations or to Fiume. He was executed for his Christian beliefs as part of one of the last such cullings by the Roman empire to stamp out Christianity. In centuries following his death, there was a dance and other performances developed on his feast day. This is said to be why he’s patron of dancers and the others.

Note

I bought all of these stamps from a dealer located in Naples. This is the first time I bought stamps from anyone in Naples. Milanese have often told me not to trust people from there, but he was very nice and his prices were fair. I may buy more from him since he lists his stamps on-line. The only problem is that they’re only on ebay. I’ve bought many things through ebay, but don’t feel comfortable buying stamps there. I need to get over that.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
