Situated in both Europe and Asia, Constantinople was located at a narrowing of the Bosporus Sea. Costantinopoli in Italian, it was the capital of the Roman Empire in the east – Rome was the capital in the west. It was named for the reigning emperor at the time, Constantine the Great. After Rome fell, it remained capital of the east, but of the Byzantine Empire. In 1453, it became the capital of the Ottoman Empire. In 1922, it became part of Turkey and was renamed in 1930 to Istanbul.

Note

The other Italian post offices in the Ottoman Empire had only a few stamps. The set for each city fit on one page each. For Constanople, though, there are many stamps, requiring quite a few pages. Rather than have a separate web page for each Constantinople album page, I’ve put them together on one web page here, like I did for with the Dodecanese Islands album pages (e.g., see Calimno). To reduce the number of album pages, I merged of them (i.e., CO-2 & CO-3). I may try to merge more. I’d like to get them down to four pages – like I did for the U.N. Climate Set.
