Econ. Comm. for Europe
The U.N. Economic & Social Commmision. The ECOSOC is a forum for talks related to international economic and social issues, including recommending U.N. policies in this area. It has five regional commissions for the particulars of key parts of the world. The U.N. Economic Commission for Europe is one of those regional commisions.
All of the U.N. member states located in Europe are part of the ECE, as well as a few neighboring states located in Asia and the Middle East. It was started in 1947 with the primary goal of the economic reconstruction of Europe after World War II. One its first tasks was to replant many forests that were over cut during the war, and to restart the timber industry, including the use of lumber for construction. That led to commmittees on the reestablishing the home construction industry, as well as building office and factory buildings. From there, more tasks and goals were added over the years.
Note
These aren’t the most interesting looking stamps. But that’s the nature of bureaucrats and committees deciding these things. They didn’t use the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, like they do in the U.S. Instead, they have several printers from around the world, with different standards for choosing designers and designs. It’s kind of hit-and-miss at this point as to whether a stamp is well design and well printed.
