U.S. Heritage
The United States of America has twenty-six World Heritage sites. These stamps commemorate just six of them. The first two stamps were sold in sheets of individual stamps. Whereas the other six were sold in a booklet with images and text describing the sites.
Smoky Mountains
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a pleasant set of mountains, located in Tennessee and North Carolina. Designated a national park in the 1940 during the adminstration of President Franklin Roosevelt, it’s quite large with over a half-million acres. It’s the most biodiverse park in the U.S. with many species of mammals, birds and fish. These include the bears, deer and elk, foxes and wolves, beavers, raccoons, and opossums. I’ve passed through the Smoky Mountains several times when traveling between New Orleans and the Northeast part of the U.S.
Yellowstone
Yellowstone National Park is located primarily in northwest Wyoming. It’s huge, much bigger than the Smokeys, without about two-million two-hundred thousand acres, it’s the second largest national park in the U.S. It became a park during the administration of President Ulysses Grant. This park also contains many species of animals, including bison – as depicted on the stamps – bears, elk, wolves, and whooping cranes. It’s perhaps most famous for an active geyser known as Old Faithful.
Yosemite
Yosemite National Park is located in California. It’s about seven-hundred sixty thousand acres. It became a protected area under Abraham Lincoln and later the first national park by the efforts of the activist, John Muir in 1890. The park contains many species of animals and plants, including Giant Sequoia trees. It’s made famous in particular by the photographs of Ansel Adams. The stamp for this site shows a shot of Yosemite Valley.
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is a park located on the island of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, it contains two active volcanoes. Established in 1916, it’s a little more than three-hundred fifty thousand acres.
Olympic Park
Olympic National Park is located on the Olympic Peninsula in the state of Washington. The park was started by President Theodor Roosevelt, but became a national park under Franklin Roosevelt. The park is about nine-hundred twenty thousand acres and includes about sixty miles of coast, as you can see in the stamp for this site. The park also includes glaciers and a rainforest.
Everglades
The Everglades National Park is located in southern end of Florida, it’s about one-million five-hundred thousand acres of wetlands and forests. The park contains a variety of wildlife, including aligators, herons and egrets, bears and cougars, and many species of fish, and manatees. The fauna include cypress and mangrove trees, which have been critical to preventing erosion and are integral to the ecosystem.
Note
The U.S. has so much to see and some of these sites are beautiful. However, these photos make the sites look rather dull. They would have done better with artists’ paintings and photos by famous photographers like Ansel Adams. As an American, I’m a disappointed by this representation.
