Clean Seas
The first set of stamps on this page commemorate the Earth Summit in 1992 that was held in Rio de Janeiro. That summit was meant to build cooperation among member states regarding environmental concerns such as pollution and toxic waste, climate changes, using alternative sources of energy, encouraging public transportation, availability of clean water, and protecting oceans from pollution and other abuses. Related to the clean oceans aspect, the vertical set of stamps with the caption Clean Oceans, was issued from each U.N. post office.
Following the Earth Summit, because of disccussions related to keeping the oceans clean, the United Nations-Oceans was formed. It’s an inter-agency program to coordinate efforts related to protecting oceans. This also included forming the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, which educates member states on international laws related to the oceans and seas.
Note
This page, although complete, is fairly sparse. I wish Leuchtturm would have added more stamps to this page. I’ve made this point about other album pages. Sorry if it’s getting tiresome. They managed to do it for the Geneva stamps (see Endangered Species). When I get better at making my own pages, I’ll replace this one with stamps from other pages, possibly redoing three pages to produce two pages.
Contains 6 spots: own 6 – 6 unused, 0 used.
