Warren Harding

Bureau of Engraving, Page 27 (GR-1)

Warren G. Harding was born in in 1865 in Ohio. When he was eighteen, he bought a newspaper in Marion and became its editor. Ownership of the paper included a railroad pass that allowed him to travel. He used it to go to the Republican National Convention of 1884 in Chicago. He lost the paper after returning from the convention, but the experience started his life in politics.

He was eventually elected to the state senate and became Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. In time, he was elected to the U.S. Senate. In 1921, Harding was elected the twenty-nineth president of the United States. He died in 1923 of a heart attacked before completing his first term in office. The three stamps on the third row of this album page are of him.

Huguenot-Walloon

In 1562, persecuted French Protestants called, Huguenots, in particular Jean Ribaut sailed from Dieppe, France landed at the mouth of St. John’s River in Florida. In 1624, some French-speaking Walloons from the south of Belgium sailed to North America aboard a vessel named, Nieu Nederland. The stamps on the top row commemorate those original European immigrants.

Note

I have all of these stamps – in unused condition – except for one, the second one on the first row. It looks the same as the first one, except that it’s reddish violet instead of just violet. I’ve been trying to find it for sale somewhere, but have mostly been unsuccessful. The couple that I have found for sale on-line were pretty expensive and didn’t last long before someone beat me to them. Completing this page isn’t going to be easy.

Contains 11 spots: own 10 – 10 unused, 0 used.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
