Piscopi

Occupations, Page PI-2 (GR-3)
Occupations, Page PI-1 (GR-3)

The island of Piscopi, called currently in Greek, Tilos, is located in the Aegian Sea, northwest of Rodi. It’s one of the smallest of the Dodecanese islands with a population of less than eight-hundred. It was an Italian colony from 1912 to 1947. These Italian stamps were to be used only on this island. They’re all overprinted with the island name, Piscopi.

This Dodecanese island in particular seems to have plenty of history, going back for hundreds, even thousands of years. One especially interesting thing is that fossils and bones of dwarf elephants were found on the island. They were around five-feet (~160 cm) tall. The remains of dwarf elephants have been found in other islands in this area, as well as in Cyprus, Sicily, and Malta. But the bones of a group of these elephants were found in Piscopi.

Note

These two album pages are complete. It was a slow process to complete these Dodecanese pages, but it’s so nice to have them finished.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
