Indigenous Art

U.N. New York, Page 2003.1 (BL-2)

The theme of this series of stamps is indigenous art. The plan is for each U.N. post office location to issue sheets of six unique stamps each, for a total of eighteen stamps. For the first set, the focus is on the art of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The first stamp here shows a close-up or detail of a linear style textile from Paracas, Peru. The second stamp shows a pendant from Colombia. The next an Hicholi Indian embroidery from Mexico. Then there’s an ornament from Brazil worn by the Rigpaksa people. From Santiago, Chile is wool crafts. Last is a Huari feathered woven hat from Bolivia.

For more of these stamps depicting indigenous art from South America and surrounding area, see the Geneva (UNG-2003.1) and the Vienna (UNV 2003.1) albums. There are also stamps in this album of indigenous art from Europe and North Africa.

Note

The indigenous art stamps are interesting, but I like the stamps of endangered species better – especially when they show pictures of birds. I’m not a bird watcher. To me, that’s someone that goes looking for birds, sometimes all day or longer excursions in the woods and elsewhere. Instead, I’m what I call a bird noticer. When they fly past me, I stop and notice them. I don’t keep a list, but I at least try to determine the species. Mostly, I enjoy just appreciating them. Maybe I could also be called a bird appreciator.
